How Adoption Works
Our adoption process is designed to match pets with the right families, making it easy and stress-free.
Plan
Think about your home, lifestyle, and long-term commitment. Make sure you’re ready to provide a loving, permanent home for a cat or dog.
Search
When you begin your search for a furry friend, read each animal’s description carefully. This ensures both you and the pet will be a purrfect match.
Apply
Submit your adoption application with accurate details so our team can determine the best fit for the animal. Please be patient with us as we review large amounts of applications.
Visit
If approved we will schedule a meet and greet session, you can then spend time with the pet to confirm a good fit for all before finalising adoption.

FAQs
Answers to common adoption questions, helping you feel confident and informed every step of the way.
Can I adopt on behalf of someone or as a gift for a friend or family member?
The decision to adopt any animal is a big decision and for this reason, we do not allow people to adopt on behalf of somebody else or as a gift for a friend or family member.
We ask that all persons responsible for the ongoing care of the pet be involved in the adoption process.
What should I bring with me if wanting to adopt?
Where possible, we recommend coming to the Shelter with your entire family / everyone who will be involved in the care of your new furry friend to see who the family bonds best with. If you are wanting to adopt, you will need to provide your proof of address and a form of photo identification.
Can I adopt from interstate?
Unfortunately not. AAPS only rehomes animals in Victoria.
Can I take home my new pet on the day of adoption?
In most cases, you will be able to take home your new pet on the day of adoption. However, if the animal is not yet desexed, or requires a veterinary or behavioural consultation prior to adoption, the animal will remain in the care of the AAPS until this takes place.
What if I am not a suitable match for a particular animal?
If our Adoption team do not feel that a particular animal is suitable for your circumstances, they may refuse the adoption. However, we have many wonderful animals waiting to find loving new homes, so in this scenario, our team will do their best to suggest another adoptive pet that will be a better match.
